From Problem to Action: Overcoming the Barriers to Change

One of the biggest challenges I face as an organizational and leadership coach is helping people get to a place where they’re ready to engage with the problems they’re facing. Recognizing a problem is relatively easy, but motivating someone to take action and tackle that problem head-on is a completely different challenge. It’s common to spend time analyzing a situation - it can feel productive, but the reality is that nothing changes until you take decisive action and grab the proverbial bull by the horns.
Coaching is all about partnering with individuals and business leaders to help them unlock their full potential. The next step is creating a plan to bring that potential to life. If you find yourself among the many who only identify their problems without ever taking steps to address them, you’re not alone. Studies suggest that anywhere from 67-92% of people who recognize their problems never actually reach their goals.
While the desire for change is strong, follow-through is often where people get stuck. If you’re struggling to chart a course or take action on the issues that are holding you back, you might need a little help to break through that barrier. Sometimes, all it takes is the right support to create the momentum necessary for progress.
One of the best ways to gain that momentum is by having someone to hold you accountable. As a coach, I strive to keep my clients on track. I say "strive" because, ultimately, I can’t make decisions for them—I can only encourage, support, and challenge them. Having someone beside you, offering encouragement and occasional guidance, is often the key to breaking through the barriers and finding solutions to your problems.
